THE STORY: Shadyside Local School District’s mission is to ensure that students acquire skills to continue as life-long learners and productive citizens.
By updating the local schools and creating a STEAM Academy, Shadyside Local School District can continue to elevate and expand its missions.
The addition of a STEAM Academy—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math—will provide new and exciting opportunities for students and educators. In addition, there are also other areas of improvement with the Shadyside Local School District facilities.
Needed improvements include:
- Non-compliant security system
- No fire suppression system
- Presence of asbestos and other hazardous materials
- Not ADA-compliant
- Inadequate ventilation
- Undersized facilities per State of Ohio standards
- Disjointed facilities
- Limited greenspace at various schools
- Traffic congestion
- No climate control
- Inadequate technology
- Not environmentally-friendly
Not only will the new and renovated K-12 facilities improve opportunities, enhance the spaces, and provide a more comfortable environment, there are other proven benefits to updating facilities.
The National Council on School Facilities found that improved facilities also improve student achievement. The State of Schools report found that high-quality school facilities lead to:
- Increasing test scores up to 25% through improved physical environments
- Improving faculty and staff satisfaction and retention
- Decreasing absenteeism through better ventilation and air quality
- Improving morale of students and faculty
- Improving productivity of students and faculty
